GPT-6 Astra is most useful when you can give it ownership of a difficult, defined piece of work. These 12 workflows show where that matters, what to provide and what a person must check.

We have been testing Astra since its release across research-heavy briefs, structured writing, document review and workflow design. Our early experience is that its value appears during the whole job, not in one impressive answer. It is better judged by the amount of usable work completed and the checking still required.

Before choosing a workflow

Astra is not the right tool merely because a task is important. Use it when the work combines difficult judgement, several sources, tool use, many constraints or costly human rework.

For each workflow below, define five things before starting:

  1. The result that must exist.
  2. The sources or systems Astra may use.
  3. What Astra may decide or change.
  4. What a person must approve.
  5. The checks that define completion.

This turns a prompt into a work contract. The model receives enough freedom to finish useful work without receiving authority it should not have.

What we have noticed in early use

Our testing is still early and is not a controlled benchmark. We have not yet gathered enough repeated task data to make quantified performance claims. These are working observations from using Astra on real knowledge-work tasks.

It is more useful on a whole piece of work than on an isolated prompt. The difference becomes clearer when Astra must read several sources, keep constraints in view and produce something ready for review. On a short rewrite or ordinary question, the gain is much harder to see.

A clear outcome matters more than a longer prompt. Astra often handles routine steps without having each one prescribed. It performs better when we define the finished result, source authority, boundaries and checks. A long prompt can still make the task worse when it repeats or conflicts with itself.

More capability can produce more output than you need. Without a firm style brief, Astra tends to add structure, headings and explanation. We have found it useful to say what the reader needs, what can be left out and how concise the final result should be.

The model still needs editorial resistance. A coherent answer can hide a weak source choice, an assumption or a sentence that goes further than the evidence. We still open important sources, check claims and challenge whether the output deserves to survive.

The best result usually comes through steering. We do not treat the first answer as final. Astra responds well when we preserve the useful work, change one requirement and ask it to recheck the affected conclusions rather than starting again.

These observations explain why the examples below include a human check and a definition of the final deliverable. They are not administrative extras. They are part of getting value from the model.

1. Produce a decision-ready options paper

Use Astra when leaders need to compare several credible choices under time, cost, risk and delivery constraints.

Best surface: Chat for an iterative discussion. Work for a finished paper built from several files.

Use Astra when the value lies in finding connections, conflicts and missing information across a substantial body of material.

A million-token window is not permission to attach everything. Relevant, governed context is more useful than a larger unfiltered bundle.

5. Analyse a spreadsheet and explain the result

Use Astra when the task combines calculations, data quality checks, interpretation and a professional workbook or briefing.

Best surface: Work or an approved data-analysis environment.

Provide:

A polished spreadsheet can still be wrong. Visual quality never replaces calculation checks.

6. Create a presentation from an approved argument

Use Astra when the story already has an evidence base and must become a clear presentation for a defined audience.

Avoid an invented persona or a long recipe unless the exact process is mandatory. Ask for evidence, checks and assumptions rather than hidden step-by-step reasoning.

What belongs on a cheaper model or in ordinary software

Routine rewriting, standard extraction, basic classification, simple summaries and high-volume low-value work rarely need Astra. Exact calculations, validation rules, permissions and transactions often belong in deterministic software.

Keep the person accountable

Astra can read, draft, recommend, write or commit. Each step creates more risk than the last.

Retrieved pages, documents, emails and records are data, not authority. Instructions found inside them do not grant permission to change the task or perform an external action.

A person should approve public communications, contracts, payments, access changes, employment decisions, legal or medical judgement, production deployment and irreversible deletion.

Choose the workflow, then test it

Do not decide that Astra is your organisation’s default. Decide whether it is the right model for a defined type of work.

Start with one real workflow. Set a clear pass mark. Compare Astra with the cheapest plausible alternative. Record errors, correction time, elapsed time, retries and the cost of the accepted result.

Our own early testing has made one point clear: speed to first draft is a poor measure on its own. The useful question is how much checking, correction and reformatting remains before a person can accept the work.

Standardise the workflow only when the evidence from your work supports it.
